Overcoming Sin with Bible Truth

Sometimes sin festers and does so much damage in our lives that, by the time we repent, we are left with a pile of bad habits we can't seem to get rid of. The Bible can help us overcome sin and start fresh.

The Bible's central theme is that of redemption. That means, from start to finish, Scripture tells us about our sinful nature and our need for a Savior whom we have in Jesus Christ. Once washed clean by the blood of Jesus, He continues to sanctify and grow us in our faith.

Overcoming sin is absolutely an essential part of growing as a believer, even though we don't tend to enjoy talking about it. The word sin certainly has a negative connotation in the world's eyes. We won't let that distract us from our goal of growing closer to God!

Admitting is always the first step!

Admitting our faults is always the first step to recovery, right? I want to encourage you that reading this and seeking help to overcome sin is a wonderful first step. God honors our heart that seeks to worship Him with our thoughts, words, and actions.

Our heart can be so callous at times that it takes a lot for us to simply admit we have a problem. This is, of course, the first step in overcoming any sin. We need to see it and dislike it!

Repent and pray for help!

Our next step needs to be repentance. It's not enough to recognize we have a sin problem. We need to decide that we want to change it and turn from our ways.

Common phrases like, "I'm only human", can keep us from making this type of decision. Have you ever noticed yourself falling into that trap and thinking, "Well, I am just impatient. That's just who I am."? Whether we justify our sin as normal or hold on to it like a "token sin" that is a part of us, this attitude will keep us from truly seeing a change in our lives.

So, let's make a decision right now that we don't want to be bound by this sin anymore. Let's ask God for forgiveness and remember that He has given us a new life, a life free from sin's bondage.

Trust God to accomplish transformation in your life. He is the author and perfector of our faith, and no sin is too big for Him to handle.
